The tree grows to a height of 45- 60 meters tall with a trunk width of 1-2 meters in diameter.
The timber has a coarse texture with sometimes interlocking grain. The colour can vary depending on the species and two popular species is bangkiria also known as yellow balau and kayu batu that is dark red in colour. The timber is typically hard to work due to its high density. It glues, stains and finishes well. Nailing is difficult and pre-drilling is essential when using screws. Workablity with hand tools is difficult but it machines quite well.
