The tree grows to a height of 30-37m and the trunk diameter is from 0.6m to 1m in width. It typically occurs in rich woods, in valleys along streams and in open woods throughout the states mentioned above.
Walnut is rated as very durable in terms of decay resistance, though it is susceptible to insect attack. Typically easy to work provided grain is straight and regular. Planer tear-out can sometimes be a problem when surfacing pieces with irregular or figured grain. Glues, stains and finishes well (though Walnut is rarely stained). Responds well to steam bending. It has good dimensional stability, shock resistance, and strength properties.
Furniture, cabinetry, gunstocks, interior panelling, veneer, turned items and other small wooden objects. Walnut is extremely popular among woodworkers and its good working characteristics coupled with its rich brown colouration puts the wood in a class by itself among hardwoods.
